Not Medical Advice

WellCal is a free wellness education platform. It is not a medical practice, and no content on this website should be treated as:

  • A diagnosis of any medical condition, disease, disorder, or illness.
  • A treatment plan, prescription, or clinical recommendation for any health condition.
  • A replacement for a consultation with a licensed physician, registered dietitian, nurse practitioner, or other qualified healthcare provider.
  • Specialist advice for pregnancy, paediatric care, mental health, eating disorders, or any other area requiring clinical expertise.
  • Emergency or urgent medical guidance of any kind.

The relationship between you and WellCal is not a doctor-patient relationship. The information we provide is for general educational purposes only. Individual health circumstances vary enormously, and only a licensed clinician who knows your full medical history can give you appropriate, personalised advice.

Calculator Limitations

WellCal's calculators use validated, peer-reviewed formulas endorsed by leading health authorities. However, all formula-based tools have inherent limitations you should understand before interpreting your results:

  • Population-Level Estimates: Every formula used by WellCal was derived from research on population groups. Results represent statistical averages and may not accurately reflect your individual physiology, metabolism, or health status.
  • Input Accuracy: Results are only as accurate as the data you enter. Inaccurate inputs will produce inaccurate outputs. Body weight, height, and activity level in particular have a significant impact on results.
  • Factors Not Captured: Our calculators cannot account for individual factors including genetics, body composition, hormonal conditions, medication effects, chronic illness, prior surgery, or specific dietary needs.
  • Not a Screening Tool: A result in a "normal" range does not confirm the absence of a health condition. A result outside a normal range is not a diagnosis. Both scenarios require clinical evaluation.
  • Formula Variability: Multiple validated formulas exist for most health metrics. Different formulas may produce different results. We state which formula each tool uses, but other valid approaches exist.
⚠️ Important: Do not make significant changes to your diet, exercise routine, medication, or healthcare plan based solely on a WellCal calculator result. Always discuss your results with a licensed healthcare professional who can account for your complete health picture.

Who Must Consult a Doctor

The following groups should always consult a licensed healthcare professional before using WellCal's calculator results to make any health-related decision:

Pregnant individuals — all stages of pregnancy require ongoing clinical supervision.

Children and adolescents — standard adult formulas do not apply to those under 18.

People with diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) — dietary and caloric targets require medical management.

People with cardiovascular disease — cholesterol, calorie, and activity targets must be clinically supervised.

People with kidney or liver disease — protein, fluid, and nutrient needs differ significantly.

People with eating disorders — calorie and macro calculators can be harmful; please seek professional support.

People on prescription medications — many medications affect metabolism, weight, and nutrient absorption.

People with thyroid or hormonal conditions — these significantly affect calorie needs and weight regulation.

Post-surgical patients — metabolic and dietary needs following surgery require clinical guidance.

The elderly (65+) — age-related physiological changes affect the accuracy of standard formulas.

Eating Disorder Notice: If you have a current or past history of an eating disorder (including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or orthorexia), we strongly recommend against using calorie, macro, or BMI calculators without the supervision and guidance of a registered dietitian or eating disorder specialist. Please seek professional support — nationaleatingdisorders.org is a trusted resource.

Medical Emergencies

🚨

In a Medical Emergency — Do Not Use This Website

If you or someone near you is experiencing a medical emergency, call your local emergency services immediately (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in Europe, or your regional equivalent). Do not search the internet or use a health calculator during a medical emergency.

WellCal is not an emergency resource and is not equipped to respond to urgent medical situations. Signs of a medical emergency that require immediate attention include but are not limited to:

  • Chest pain, pressure, or tightness — possible signs of a heart attack.
  • Sudden severe headache, vision changes, weakness, or difficulty speaking — possible signs of a stroke.
  • Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or choking.
  • Signs of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): swelling, hives, dizziness, difficulty breathing.
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially during pregnancy.
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide — please contact a crisis helpline immediately.

Our Editorial Standards

WellCal is committed to publishing content that is accurate, evidence-based, and honest. Our editorial principles are:

  • Formula Sourcing: Every calculator uses the specific formula recommended by a major health authority. We state which formula we use and cite the source on each calculator page.
  • Primary Sources: We link directly to WHO, CDC, NIH, NHLBI, AHA, ACOG, Mayo Clinic, and peer-reviewed journals — not to secondary summaries or unverified sources.
  • No Sponsored Results: Calculator results are never influenced by commercial relationships, affiliate programmes, or advertiser interests. A result is what the formula says, nothing more.
  • Clear Disclaimers: Every calculator page on WellCal includes a medical disclaimer explaining the tool's limitations and when professional advice is required.
  • Regular Review: We update calculators and content when clinical guidelines change. We correct errors promptly and transparently.
  • Honest Limitations: We do not overstate what our tools can measure. Where a metric is approximate or contested, we say so clearly.
